Seducciones de Sor Juana

Explore the life, work, and context of the Mexican poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

About the project

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a remarkable 17th-century Mexican nun, poet, and intellectual who defied societal norms by pursuing education and becoming a writer. Her poetry, plays, and essays challenged gender norms and tackled themes of feminism, women's rights, and knowledge. She joined a convent to pursue her intellectual interests but faced Church opposition. She authored Reply to Sister Filotea, an influential letter defending women's education rights. Her legacy as an early feminist icon, trailblazer, and literary figure continues to inspire globally.

Seducciones de Sor Juana is a complete interactive resource on the life, work, and context of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Curated by Sandra Lorenzano, this app features Sor Juana’s most emblematic sonnets, poems, letters, and other works, in the voices of renowned writers, poets, and artists, as well as a collection of studies, portraits, images, audiovisual materials, a timeline, and a section where kids can draw, learn to write sonnets, prepare Sor Juana’s food recipes, and discover 17th-century music.

Created in partnership with El Claustro University, Seducciones de Sor Juana is part of an app series launched in 2011 by Mexico's Ministry of Culture featuring the life and work of celebrated Mexican poets, including Octavio Paz, José Gorostiza, Amado Nervo, Jorge Cuesta, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz ⎯ whose goal is to imagine new ways to bring literature closer to new generations through digital technologies.
